The Virgin Mary Was Not a Virgin—At Least Not in the Way We Think Today
The term “virgin” applied to Mary reflects ancient cultural and linguistic meanings, not modern biological definitions. The Hebrew word almah means a young woman of marriageable age, not necessarily one who has never had sex. The Greek parthenos also held broader meanings. Mary’s “virginity” is better understood as a symbol of purity and divine intervention, emphasizing her role in salvation rather than her physical state.
